PLACEMAT

MATERIAL

- Cotton Fabric

- Cotton thread

- Cotton batting

- Paper for printing or coping

- Sewing machine

INSTRUCTIONS

- Select a school house block. Suggestions: 365 foundation quilt block, Linda Causee; Encyclopedia of classic quilt patterns, Leisure Arts; Fig tree quilts, J. Figueroa and L. Quan; McCallsquilting.com, May/Jun2011.

- Resize to 3 in x 3 in block and make 6 copies for each placemat. This block comes from McCalls

- Make each part of the schoolhouse using your preferred paper piecing technique. This one is sewing through the paper, so you will need as many copies as blocks.

- Sew each foundation piece to complete the block and press using heavy starch. This will help to trim the block to a perfect square. This one is 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 in.

- Using chain sewing attach the blocks to the black fabric.

- Because of the thickness of the block, the use of clips helps to keep the alignment with the black fabric.

- Complete the placemat by adding the backing, the batting and quilt a simple parallel lines for the black fabric and stitch in the ditch for the schoolhouses.
